What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder which presents inattentive/disorganized behaviours and/or hyperactive/impulsive behaviours.1
Types of ADHD
There are 3 types of ADHD:
- Predominantly inattentive/disorganized – describes people who may have trouble focusing, organizing, finishing tasks (especially those that require extra focus), and sticking to one task. They may also make careless mistakes.1
- Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive – describes people who may be fidgety, chatty, and may experience difficulty waiting their turn and concentrating. They may also act without thinking and may have a poor sense of danger.1
- Predominantly combined – describes people who have a mix of both inattentive and hyperactive traits.1
Other Important Information
- People with ADHD are more likely to have other mental health conditions such as anxiety.1
- Challenges may include academic struggle, poor self-esteem, and engaging in unfavourable behaviours (for example, acting out).2
- Women and girls with ADHD are more likely to go undiagnosed than men and boys because they present more inattentive symptoms, and are less disruptive.3
